Start off soft Playing off the tee is so important. There is that old saying in golf that you drive for show and you putt for dough. It was drilled into us as young golfers, but in reality, if you can’t get the ball off the tee, it doesn’t matter how good a putter you are.
Your tee shot is the first move of a chess game. It is the soft movement of the pawn to start the game. It has to be the least aggressive play as you are trying to set up the hole to score. Unless you feel like Happy Gilmore and you are going to bypass the iron play the wedge play and the putting!
Finishing off strong
All the modern drivers with the correct set up are designed to get the ball off the tee with ease then the game becomes more playable. The green should be where you will be the most aggressive in your game plan because this is where you are trying to score - your mindset has to be positive and attacking.
There’s no point dribbling a 4-foot putt up to the hole and tapping it in! you have to give it a chance to go in, and if it does not reach the hole it ain’t going in. The closer you get to scoring, the more focused, positive and aggressive you have to get in your mind. It can be very easy to talk about it, putting it into practice can be a different thing altogether.
Ladies' Lessons
Our ladies' lessons spring coaching will be starting this Friday, 24 January at 11am and we will be around the green working on the basics of putting and chipping. I strongly believe that the impact thought for these shots is exactly the same as the impact thought for a driver.
We will go over the logic of this in more detail during the lessons but in theory, the ball will react to the specific club and do what the club is meant to do. You should not have to change your impact thought to produce a different shot, you only change the club.
Sometimes in this game, it is just about thinking things out in a different manner.
