Welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter. It's Peter Lyons Cup and Shield this weekend so make sure you get your name on the sheet for one of our last major outings of the season. Remember if you can't paly please take your name of the sheet as there is great demand on our timesheets especially in the mornings. The forecast is good so get out and enjoy the late summer weather as it may not be around for much longer.
We have some great features for you this week, such as our brilliant Video of the Week where we take a look at when things don’t quite go to plan for some of the world’s best golfers. Enjoy the read!

New and old We are at present having a bit of a clear out of summer and winter stock in the shop with rails of T-Shirts, Jumpers and Outerwear to get you ready for the winter and season ahead. Come down and take a look. We also have some lovely new wear for the winter and beyond and it is coming into that time of the year when it can be hot/cold/wet/sunny. Hopefully not snowy, but it can be everything else.

Select the right club for the course Titleist has launched their new irons and rescues as previously mentioned and Mizuno has launched their new MP20 range too. Take a look at the irons on my website, they have really gone back to the feel and look of tradition on all their irons. There is a saying that nothing feels like a Mizuno. This is a traditional club maker that has tested its products on traditional surfaces. The firmer the surface, i.e. a links course or a dry heathland course the softer the strike needs to be. The ball has to have a chance to hold the clubface for a split second longer to get the control that is needed. This control comes from the spin that is required to keep the ball on the desired flight that the golfer is looking for. |
|
A soft forged club or a good cast club with very little chrome, produces this feel on a tight links lie. On a parkland course with the ball sitting up, the strike tends to be more adaptable to poor ball striking and the mass-produced chrome-plated game improvement irons come into their own. It simply will feel different when the ball is sitting down without a real cushion under it. All manufacturers produce clubs that will adhere to everyone’s needs and wants. However certain companies stick to their ethos, and Mizuno is definitely one of those companies. |
Playing winter golf Coming into the winter as I have said before it is so important to keep warm and supple on the course. Loose-fitting clothes will feel good and free but are really no use in the winter on your skin. There has been a large movement in the last few years towards the tighter fitting skins and compression gear. These garments when you first put them on feel like they restrict your movements when it reality they actually keep you warmer and looser. The nature of their design after a few minutes makes them feel like a second skin and compress your blood flow to help circulation. It is a known fact that when you start to get cold your circulation slows down as your body protects its vital organs and the less important parts of your body start to feel cold, like your fingers, toes arms etc. It starts in the smaller muscles and wearing a proper winter compression garment prevents this from happening as quickly. This, in turn, lessens the chance of injury as when we stiffen up in the cold we start to make poor body movements resulting in injury.

We will be holding a few new lines of warm wear this winter and this will start appearing in the shop towards the end of this month. We will, of course, be fully stocked in the traditional needs of woolly hats, mittens snoods, thermal gloves all ready for the great winter ahead. It is never too cold to go out, it's just that in our country we don’t seem to wear the correct wear clothing. It would not happen in other countries and the quicker we educate ourselves the more we will enjoy gold all year around.

Spoilt last summer This has been a funny year as we were totally spoilt last year with the summer and in reality, this summer has actually been quite good. The course has benefitted from the bit of rain and there certainly has been a lot of heat to help it grow back. Over the winter period, hopefully, it will have a few little things tidied up and we will be flying going into 2020, which be a huge year for golf in Ireland in the aftermath of this year’s Open Championship. Bit by bit we are getting more and more overseas visitors to our course as bit by bit we chip into a huge market that has not been looked at. |
A really big part of this has been the success of our new website that is quite simply stunning visually. This has a huge impact on players starting to use our course and hopefully in the future it will develop into the selling tool and information tool that it is primed to do. There will always be slight issues on its start-up and we all have opinions as to how it should run and look so please, if you have any ideas for the website please let us know in the shop (or Pat) as there are things that can be missed in such a big project and this will develop everything going forward as it reality it is our shop window to the world. |
You will probably notice this as above with so many more overseas flags flying above our putting green on a day-to-day basis. This week alone I think we have a USA flag up every day. This also has the added advantage of less society golf and more time for members as our revenue is rising with less traffic on the course. There is a real solid plan in the background, the foundation of which has been laid by the present board of management led by Eddie that at times goes very much unnoticed in our day-to-day workings in the club. The board has quite a few places up for election/re-election this winter to really progress the club into the future and if you are genuinely interested in the clubs future direction then why not take a plunge and put your self forward to have a real say in the clubs direction. |
Hopefully, over the winter the course will start to bring itself back to its full excellence as we have the work done on the greens already, in the middle of still a lot of heat and light so in a few weeks we have the greens back with no more poor surfaces for the winter ahead. This can only enhance members enjoyment, overseas visitors experience and all that play our course. I know that we all have feelings on when it should be done, but getting them done earlier, in reality, gives us so much more good golf to look forward to in the months ahead. |
Mizuno’s new irons have landed |
Sit back and hold on tight as we guide you through the latest family of irons that are sure to set the standard for the remainder of 2019. Introducing Mizuno's MP-20 range... |
MP-20 HMB It stands for Hot Metal Blade and is a club that has traditionally been used as a long-iron replacement. However, you can now get a full set of performance hybrid irons that look fantastic at address and are incredibly easy to hit. |
MP-20 MMC This second generation multi-material concept (MMC) iron boasts a 12g tungsten weight in the 7 to 4 irons, as well as a thinner topline and improved feel, for better forgiveness where you need it the most.
|
MP-20 MB One look at this muscle back and it's easy to see why people fall in love with Mizuno irons, but it's the copper plating behind the face that makes the MP-20 MB a real winner in the feel and workability departments. |
