What’s in your bag? More importantly, why? One thing that did show up was the variety of clubs that were vying for the attention at the top of the leaderboard. Reed, a well renowned Callaway staff player, was swinging the PING G400 LST driver, along with a complete mix of irons and wedges. It is worth noting that very few of them have the standard setup that we all grew up thinking should be in the bag i.e. driver, 3 & 5 wood, 3-PW in irons a SW & a LW and a putter. Many of the modern players actually just pick the setup that suits them best. If you look in your bag you will find 1, maybe 2 clubs that you have for the sake of having them. Having a 3 & 5 wood for example is carrying two clubs that pretty much do the same job. You are likely to reach for the one you hit the best, not make you decision on the shot actually required. Wedges are the big mess up in peoples bag and can leave a really big gap in what is needed. In the modern set of clubs the PW is now on average 44/45 degrees, in the past it would have been 48 degrees. The SW has not really changed with the loft staying around 55/56 degrees. This leaves a huge gap in the traditional makeup of your set. All the other clubs have a maximum gapping of 3 or 4 degrees between each head numbers. This always leads to the problem that we hear the most in peoples’ short games that they are either too close or too far away from the green to use the club they want. This is where you have to have the proper club gapping in the bag to allow the scoring clubs to work properly. Why not drop your traditional 3 & 5 wood for a high lofted 3 wood or 4 wood, maybe drop the long irons replace them with a hybrid or two and then at the other end of the bag leave room to get the correct wedge setup in the bag. You will be surprised how many shots you could save in your game with a bag set up that suits your needs game needs. We have the new SM7 wedges from Titleist, High-Toe wedges from TaylorMade, Mack Daddy wedges from Callaway and of course both the Glide and Glide Stealth from PING. All of these perform in different ways and are available in the shop. Come down and discuss what options will work best for your game or take it one step further and book a Gapping Session, where we can accurately measure how far each club goes and then work on bridging any big gaps.
