It’s Masters week and the start of the season is real and happening as we will be glued to our screens all weekend. Some of us I know will be lucky enough to be there in person, what an experience that would be, but for us mere onlookers at least we will see all the golf if not get the opportunity to breath in the fresh azaleas. Who will win, what will be the score, will Tiger do the unthinkable a few months ago, is it Rory’s time who knows but we will be watching intently. Easter turned out to be a bit colder than we had hoped and once again we have lost valuable playing time and competitions, however had new stock land in the shop and we have some reviews and thoughts below.
Let’s start looking forward to the season and all the golf we have ahead, it will be time to put up the Christmas tree before we know it. Enjoy the read. |
The new PING G700 irons The G700 is a great looking club, it has the profile of a traditional players club, only very oversize with the maximum amount of forgiveness any player could want. The distance, accuracy and control out this iron is not rivaled any where at the price as this club is directly pitched against Callaway’s Epic irons (rrp €1800) and the hugely talked about PXG (rrp €3000). The only other club that can come close at a reasonable price is the 790 from TaylorMade. If you want to be astounded by a performing iron at under €1000 of this quality book in for a fit, you will not be disappointed. We have the new G700 available to demo so click here to request your trail. |

New balls please... The new ball from Bridgestone will be a sure fire buy this season, especially if Tiger can continue his comeback. He is the big name signing for this well established company that have taken a step back into the European market after a few years. The big selling point on this ball, just like the Callaway Chrome is the price. These are even better value as the Callaway has risen slightly in price and we will be selling the new Bridgestone ball for €40 a dozen or 2 dozen for €70. Against the market leader ProV1 this is real value at €20 less a dozen if you buy two. While stocks last there will be 2 free balls with a double dozen purchase of the Bridgestone ball. The reason that Tiger bought into this ball was in his own words, the pure consistency of the result. Many players over the last few years have found the traditional market leader not to their liking as it is a multifunctional ball. The ProV1, like all Titleist products, does not top the tables in any of the important numbers, like distance, spin, stability in the air. It does however come out top on an average of these categories. Where one ball may give optimum distance it lets itself down in control and vice versa. The ProV1 is just good in all areas, not excellent, good, and this is why it is still the ball of choice for most tour professionals. We all want different things from a ball, if we are only looking to tick one box, then the ProV1 is not your ball. Both the tour balls from Callaway and Bridgestone cost less than Titleist’s middle ball the NXT, so why not get a tour ball in your hand and make a new season comeback just like the 15 times major winner Tiger…..sorry that was meant for next week.

What driver should you hit? We are currently custom fitting in the shop for PING, Callaway, Titleist and TaylorMade drivers for may golfers looking to improve consistency or gain distance. When it comes down to it there is very little difference in performance between any of the major leaders in this field and mostly it comes down to looks and what you are used to. There are completely different feels at the top end of the market in the difference between TM, Callaway and PING. The new Callaway Rogue feels very much like an old persimmon wooden head, with a dull thump and soft feel. Its performance though is far from old hat with one of the most stable ball flights you can imagine and long. This is a great club for all standards of players wanting to play with all sorts of balls. With this feel you can strike a firm ball and get the feel of a soft ball. This gives you the optimum distance with soft feel, hard to get in this modern golf era. The M3/M4 has a solid feel but not the softness of the face. You know when you have hit it as ball will not stay on the face very long giving a very explosive low spinning shot. If you have grown up used to just hitting the ball hard then this is the gun for you off the tee. It is just designed to be hit, get a desired shot shape and just, well……hit…..hard. While the choice for many in the modern game, you will love it or loath it, there will be no deliberations on this one. The PING G400 is just good in all aspects. It is the most competitively priced, it feels solid and gives a real spring when hit which a lot of players like. It is consistent and does exactly what it is desired to do, put the ball in play with no real hardship. Titleist 917 is very similar to the ping in regards to consistency but its design allows a little bit more shot shaping and flight control. It’s a bit like the ball, performs in many areas very well, exactly what the serious player is looking for.

Golf teams We have many teams starting to perform in competitions over the next few weeks and we wish them well. Hopefully there will be a couple of “cup runs” that we can all get behind as the season progresses as it would be great for the club to really show its teeth in inter club competitions. This will help showpiece the course to many visitors as the feedback after last weeks scratch cup has been super and we need to keep pushing the quality of our links to the outside golfing world. |
Junior lessons There will be junior lessons on Tuesday night at the normal times and these will be the last for 2 weeks when they will restart on Tuesday 24th April hopefully running most weeks for the entire summer period. Once again I would ask if possible that if you have a bit of spare time you can at times accompany the juniors out to the range and watch how they are getting on. It is so important from a safety point of view firstly, but also they want to show you how they are progressing and love showing off their good shots and achievements. Your participation is vital to how they progress as the more interest you show the more likely they are to want to improve. I am really thankful and appreciate those that take the time to come out, I know it can't be every week and I wouldn’t expect it. Ladies lessons Ladies group lessons start again on Tuesday 24th at 11 am, 12.30pm and then a new session on Wednesday evening at 6.30pm. These will run for 6 weeks then a short break and will start up again going into the real summer months. Each lesson will be limited to 8 players so we all get the attention needed so booking in the shop is essential. If I need to put on extra group sessions any week that will not be a problem.

Put your name up in lights |
It only comes around once a year and it’s that time again - Masters week! The first Major of the year takes place at Augusta National this week, which we always take as a sign that the season is getting underway. With this in mind, we have one question for you: are you ready to play your best golf this year? |
Maximise your potential We've all sat looking at the honours boards in a clubhouse before, admiring the one name that appears to be on most and thinking 'wow, they must be pretty good!' Well, how good would it feel if that name up in lights was yours? If you come and speak to us we can talk about your strengths, weaknesses and goals for this season and look at the best way to help you achieve them, whether that’s a one-off fault-fixer lesson, regular sessions to aid your consistency or perhaps a look at your equipment. |
