Course update On the course the rough is gradually disappearing and this will lead to much firmer links style rough in the coming summers and also a very playable course over the winter time when people are out for fun and don’t really want to spend much time looking for balls. Stephen is also adding a new divot bag holder that will appear on the 15th tee for the winter time (10thhole in winter course) and will be moved probably to 9th or 10th tee from the summer. The job that is done by the members and visitors during the year filling in the divots as we go around is invaluable and keeps the course looking at its best throughout the year. With a bit of a downpour over the last few days we have already seen the run towards us from inland golfers and hopefully throughout this winter, our course will become the place to be for members and their guests as we move into a few very important years for Irish golf...
An important few years
1951 was the last time the Open Championship visited Ireland to Royal Portrush and it returns to the same venue very soon in the summer of 2019. Ireland will be the focal point of world golf for that week in July and this in turn will lead to an influx of golf tourism in the following years 2020 onwards as the avid golfer will be looking to play The Open course from all over the world. It is the club’s intention to really drive towards this period in regards to their business plan and bring Laytown and Bettystown Golf Club onto the stage it deserves to be as a venue for overseas golfers to enjoy a traditional links experience at a traditional members golf course. A lot of unnoticed work has been going on, mistakes have been made and overcome, but the club is starting to drive towards this goal and hopefully the results will become more evident over the next few years. I think we are all guilty, I know I am, of wanting instant success, but to make change without risking what we have is not as simple as flicking on a light switch. The club is now in a great position to develop at a rate that will keep the values that have made it what it is today.
