The next generation of stars

The Walker Cup is a fiercely contested match between the best amateur golfers from GB&I and the United States, consisting of foursomes and singles matches across two days. The 2017 contest took place over the weekend and the end result was a convincing win for the American team, rectifying their biggest ever loss in 2015.

It’s a fantastic chance to see some of the upcoming stars of our game and is certainly a good indicator of future Ryder Cup players. For example, 2007’s match saw McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Danny Willett and Rickie Fowler compete for their respective countries, whilst Jordan Spieth defeated Andy Sullivan in 2011’s final singles. If you go even further back you’ll find that the likes of McDowell, Casey and a certain Tiger Woods have all featured in years gone by.

Will any of 2017’s crop make the transition from top amateur to world beater like some of the guys above? Only time will tell...

Rarer than a hole-in-one...

There was a great moment on the course last weekend when a rare event took place with Derek Murray holing his second shot to the par 5, 4th hole. It is the sort of thing that would have the PGA Tour fans going wild, but Derek has just taken it in his stride. An albatross is a rarer happening than a hole in one, by quite a margin, so if you see him don’t forget to congratulate him.

For the record, it was a controlled 6 iron, there was no luck involved; he meant it!

Fitting Days recap

Over the past few weeks we have seen two completely different fits from two completely different companies. We had our second fitting day from PING and our first from Callaway. It was a little surprising at the different outcomes from the events as PING once again did not startle but did the right things right, giving a real positive response to their product.

This year’s big company Callaway, with all the frills and spills, had the complete opposite reaction with great disappointment in the product performance throughout the range, with the exception of the Epic driver that stood up to its hype and performed excellently. It highlights the reason why the really good companies continue to get better consistently and other companies suffer extreme highs and lows with their product.

Are you prepared? 

It is only the second week in September but it is starting to feel very different from the warmth of a few weeks ago with a real autumn nip in the air. You will see the shop stock change accordingly with the new range of outerwear from ProQuip, Stubert, FootJoy and Glenbrae appearing in the shop over the next few weeks.

We have a new range of colourful winter wooly hats and mitts, club logoed, as well to keep you warm over the next little while. Having said that, the weather could just as quickly change back and we have plenty of summer stock that we are looking to clear out of the shop as well, so pop in for a late summer, early autumn bargain.
