Welcome to the latest edition of our weekly newsletter. This week's email has an exclusive interview with World Long Drive champion Joe Miller as he looks to defend the crown he won in 2016, as well as a couple of news stories from last week that certainly shine a bright light over the sport we love. It’s official: golf is good for you

There's been a lot of focus on Public Health England’s One You campaign in the media over the past week, which challenges each person to complete just 10 minutes of continuous brisk walking per day to help boost their health and reduce the risk of early death by 15%.

At the same time, a unique study assessing the benefits of golf on health was announced that, when combined with the above campaign, makes interesting reading. The project – the most comprehensive study on golf and health to date – found improvements in life expectancy, a decreased risk of more than 40 major chronic diseases, as well as positive impacts on cholesterol, body composition and mental health.

So, what's the take home message from all of this? Keep playing golf!

Junior lessons

Our junior lessons start up again on Tuesday at the earlier time of 4.30pm and we will be running these right up until just before the half term break at end of October. There will also be the second hour from 5.30pm as well. This will be the same on Thursday evenings as well and the regular time will stay on Saturdays at 1pm. It is getting a bit cooler so make sure the kids are well wrapped up for the evenings on the range as there is no real hiding place on a cold night.

Ladies lessons

The ladies lessons will start again on Tuesday at 11am as normal and then again on Wednesday night at 6.30pm, an hour earlier.

Getting ready for the winter months

It is hard to believe that the summer is in the last few weeks of its life and we look forward to the next few months of early autumn that over the last few years has been great for golf. The course has been in great shape and there will be a bit of work done on the greens next week while the weather is still strong hopefully not causing too much heartache for a short time. It is always a hard call to make as to when to get the greens ready for the winter ahead and there is never a good time, but it has to be done.

In the Players irons we will see the development of MB and CB, but as their staff players have said when asked by the R&D team how to improve the irons they were simply told…'If you have to change them, don’t mess them up', so there will be very little difference, although any change will be for a reason.

Round up

Last week our Senior Cup team were unlucky to get beaten in the Leinster final by Carton House. At this stage it could have gone either way with two very strong teams going after each other and unfortunately the ball rolled the wrong way for us. Hopefully the strength of our own team will only get stronger and there will be success ahead for them as the work that they have put in behind the scenes has been huge. A big mention to Pat Farrell and Paul Bermingham who have managed and supported the team with huge effort and hopefully will continue into the future. The hole team and club were gutted to get so close.
